Communicating food security, a course for journalists

Il first Turin confrontation between journalists and the scientific world of food safety ended with a full house. The Agorà space, which in the central Piazza Castello hosts debates on issues related to the Milan Expo, saw the comparison between researchers of the zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d'Aosta and journalists on the way in which a delicate matter is being communicated as food security.

In reality, it was a course for journalists with a lot of credits for compulsory vocational training, thought precisely by the zooprophylactic institute and by the journalists' subalpine union to provide more scientific instruments to journalists who write about food safety.

The event saw the collaboration of the Spazi included Turin news service.

After the greetings of Alessandra Comazzi (Subalpine press and the introduction of Maria Caramelli (acting director of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d'Aosta), the first report concerned the food safety network in Italy and in Europe (Lucia Decastelli, Zooprophylactic).

Then it was the turn of the "main foodborne risks and diseases" (Silvia Gallina, Zooprophylactic).

In the following, the case study on food alarms of the large-scale retail trade was presented, how a supermarket reacts (with Adriana Ricca, quality manager of Nova Coop e Flavia Marè, quality manager of Carrefour).

Finally, the round table: "Communicating food safety".

Here they spoke, Bartolomeo Griglio of ASL TO5 on communication in emergency situations: obligations of confidentiality, transparency and health protection of the local competent authority); Barbara Alessandrini of the Teramo Zooprofilattico on the relationship between the scientific institutional source and the journalist: strengths and points for improvement); Luca Ferrua, La Stampa on the right of readers to know: what the public demands of a major newspaper in terms of food safety); Sergio Miravalle, Blog "Giro di Vite" on www.lastampa.it on how the perception of food safety changes. The moderation was entrusted to Massimiliano Borgia journalist of Spazi Food.
