Define the food policies of the future: it is discussed on Thursday at the inaugural conference

Following up on the Expo experience, trying to define the food policies of the future. This is the theme of the convention that Thursday morning (9.30-12.30 at the Cavallerizza Reale) will open the Festival of Food Journalism. And so, while Milan is questioning the future use of the Rho Fiera area, which hosted the Universal Exposition, Turin brings the debate on food policies under the Mole.

There is indeed a strong bond between the two cities, which often work in synergy. It is no coincidence that in the last few years, in Milan and Turin, “food policies” were born, with which the cities have undertaken to study solutions to obtain healthy food, quality and sustainable development. And that led, just during Expo, to sign the so-called "Urban food policy pact", a pact between mayors to give cities a central role in defining food policies, in order to respond to citizens' needs, making quality food accessible to all and establishing a virtuous relationship with the rural territory.

If the declared goal is quality food accessible to all, it is not so clear how to achieve this result. In Italy, food policies defined at national level are still lacking. There is no clear regulatory framework and probably also a "good, clean and fair" food culture (as the Slow Food slogan says). And the role of information is crucial in this: media, journalists and, why not, food bloggers. Precisely in this sense, the first edition of the Festival of Food Journalism becomes a strategic opportunity to take stock of food policies in a country, Italy, which through Expo has just claimed to represent the quality of its food culture to the world.

To address these delicate topics will be, at the opening conference (entitled "What food policies after Expo"), the institutions, the FAO, some leading companies in the gastronomic sector, consortia and cooperatives that touch on food issues on a daily basis. After the greetings of the Vice-rector of the University of Turin, Elisabetta Barberis, of the president of the Order of Journalists of Piedmont, Alberto Sinigaglia, And Alessandra Comazzi, President of the Associazione Stampa Subalpina, will intervene, moderated by the deputy director of the Press, Luca Ubaldeschi, the mayor of Turin Piero Fassino, who is also President Anci, e Maurizio Baruffi, Chief of Staff of the Mayor of Milan, in addition to Maria Caramelli, director of the experimental zooprophylactic institute Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d'Aosta. For the food world, they will talk Giuseppe Lavazza, Mattia Pariani, president of the Unionalimentare di Torino, the president of Coldiretti, Roberto Moncalvo and Luigi Pelliccia, Head of the Studies Department of Federalimentare. Then there will be the top management at Coop and Camst, Marco Pedroni e Antonella Pasquariello, representing large-scale retail trade and catering (Camst is the leader for school canteens). Then space for interventions by Carlo "Carlin" Petrini, inventor and president of Slow Food, always engaged in the battle for fair compensation for farmers and for the promotion of quality food accessible to all, and Clara Velez Fraga of the FAO, which will bring data on hunger and food waste. They will conclude two institutional interventions: that of Antonio Saitta, coordinator of the Health Commission of the State-Regions conference, and of Andrea Olivero, deputy minister for agricultural and food policies.
