Piedmont, seasonal fruit housed in containers

Piemonte, stagionali della frutta accolti nei container

Guarantee a dignified stay for seasonal workers who harvest fruit.
This is the concern of the mayors of the "fruit municipalities" of Piedmont, Saluzzo and Lagnasco, along with Coldiretti.

The director of Coldiretti Cuneo, Tino Arosio, the area secretary Mario Dotto and the mayors of Saluzzo and Lagnasco, Mauro Calderoni and Roberto Dalmazzo illustrate the project to welcome migrants in the Saluzzo area. 4000 seasonal workers, mostly African, move every year in the summer to collect peaches, apples and kiwis. The farms that hire seasonal workers are not obliged to provide for the accommodation of workers for the night even if over 2 / 3 of the companies they take charge. Seasonal workers have very short contracts, aimed at the time of harvest, and fail to provide for their own accommodation. Two reception camps were therefore established, one wanted by Coldiretti and the other organized by the municipality of Saluzzo and Lagnasco. Mauro Calderoni, mayor of Saluzzo, hopes that in the near future "a single labor selection channel will be set up so that it can be organized, in advance, with respect to housing, avoiding the repercussions on the local communities of hundreds and hundreds of workers who stay the best in the territories for a very short period. We are doing it spontaneously, we need clear and precise rules. Municipalities are doing their part but the mechanism must be balanced upstream, at national level. We want to be a virtuous, avant-garde project, to prevent our communities from being infiltrated by phenomena of illegality that exploit this type of work. ”The newly elected mayor of Lagnasco, Roberto Dalmazzo, adhered to what was already organized by Saluzzo. Emphasize that producers who host seasonal workers should be helped because current regulations are not adequate for reception in existing facilities. Even the containers have rules that, if respected to the letter, make them uninhabitable by seasonal workers. It therefore requires new guidelines that are clear and, above all, feasible.
