Carlo Verna: "the protection of journalists is the protection of citizenship"

Carlo Verna: "la tutela de giornalisti è tutela della cittadinanza"

The speech by Carlo Verna, national president of the Order of Journalists, at the Turin Food Journalism Festival began with a heartfelt declaration of solidarity with colleagues from the Press. The difficulties of the Turin newspaper well represented the general crisis facing the national publishing industry, a crisis that according to Verna must be resolved through new legislation on the journalistic profession. "A legislation - Verna affirmed - that must take into account many aspects, from a reasonable definition of fair compensation, which cannot be based on the principle of the demultiplier, which depreciates journalistic contributions, to the protection of the freedom of journalists who must be seriously protected from judicial initiatives aimed at intimidating information professionals at the expense of press freedom ”. "The protection of the journalistic profession - concluded Verna - it is the protection of all citizenship and the right to information which is one of the fundamental principles on which our democracy is based". Carlo Verna was introduced and interviewed by Alberto Sinigaglia, president of the Piedmont journalists' order, in a meeting that also involved Vittorio Roidi, president of the Paolo Murialdi Foundation. Andrea Martella, Undersecretary of State to the Prime Minister's Office, Publishing Information Department, was absent for institutional reasons.
