Meat is the new frontier of the food industry at the 2018 Festival

La carne e la nuova frontiera dell'industria alimentare al Festival 2018

There is no element of our diet that divides more than her: the meat. And there is probably no more suitable context than the Festival of Food Journalism to take stock of how the world of information handles such a delicate subject.

The meat is often demonized in the media. The reasons are varied, and often the criticisms are not unjustified: those who hurl themselves against meat do so for reasons of environmental sustainability, ethics, food safety or health. The peak of aversion coincided with the alarm that theWorld Health Organization launched 2015 in the fall, when it highlighted how excessive consumption of red meat could lead to cancer.

In fact, many experts (including the Italian Cancer Research Association) believe that moderate consumption of unprocessed meat (once or twice a week) is good for the supply of valuable nutrients. In short, meat is certainly a controversial food, but it is not the absolute evil. The real problem, if anything, is that this element plays a leading role in the main ones food emergencies, from the chicken with the avian to the Sardinian pigs positive to the trichinella, just to mention the most recent case. Serious alarms, not to be underestimated, which have as a side effect the proliferation, especially on the web, of colossal buffalo (just mention that September 2015 of HIV-contaminated meat).

As always, it is up to information to clarify, because technological innovations are changing the world even in the food sector and there is an increasing need for a responsible journalism. An example? The debate on meat grown in the laboratory, which is discussed more and more often and on which consumers claim the right to serious and timely information. That's why the 2018 Festival will tell the new frontiers of the food industry. Even from the meat.
