Against food waste, mandatory food bag in restaurants

Contro gli sprechi di cibo, food bag obbligatoria nei ristoranti

Last year, February 5, the national day against food waste, coincided with the press conference to present the 2020 Festival where, for the first time, we launched a communication campaign for a battle that is close to our hearts: the the right to take any uneaten food home from the restaurant. In fact, on 5 February 2020 we proposed a law to adopt the food bag in restaurants, canteens, festivals, fairs. Fifteen days later we distributed a food bag to all 1.200 participants in the Festival.

A campaign that wants to follow the example of France where the food bag in restaurants is required by law and that wants to push customers not to be ashamed in asking to take leftovers home. Special containers for delivering paid and not consumed food to customers are not very present in Italian restaurants. Most of the premises do not have one or offer the customer unsuitable or unwieldy containers.

Instead, we think the great tradition of Italian design can put innovative food bag models on the market, made with materials with technology suitable for optimal contact with food and with ergonomic and space-saving shapes.

It is important for us that the food bag is also an object that conveys information, in particular on the correct conservation of food.

The signature collection campaign on the change.org platform is reaching 15.000 signatures and also this year we will launch our proposals to improve information and communication against food waste.

On the topic of food waste during the last edition of the Festival, the deputy of Italia Viva, Maria Chiara Gadda, godmother of the current law against food waste and colleague and vice-president of the Agriculture Commission of the Chamber, Susanna Cenni (PD). The Honorable Cenni acknowledged the spirit of our proposals framing them in the bill "Provisions for the reduction of waste in the catering sector through the reuse of food surpluses, as well as tax incentives for the reconversion of agri-food waste". The PDL was presented at the Festival.
